I’m back with a review for the newest IT (2017). This is the kind of horror I love. Old-fashioned monster who preys on everyone’s fears. A monster that creeps into your house and scares the bejaysus out of you.
This year has been a good year for child actors and this film is no exception they all have unique character traits with some of them reacting as you’d expect to a monster they seem powerless to kill. Jaeden Lieberher and Sophia Lillis who play Bill and Beverly respectably are the stand-out performers in the ensemble. Lieberher plays a sympathetic and determined leader who is like the glue that holds the gang together much like the Mikey played by Sean Austin in The Goonies, he cares about all the members from the gang and wants to get to the end of the mystery. Lillis plays the tragic Beverly who is abused by her father and is slut shamed by the some of the kids around town. But Lillis just brings a tragic charm to the character that immediately endears her to you and I could easily see her becoming a massive star in the future.
Now to the guts of the thing, Pennywise. The horrific and sinister dancing clown played by Bill Skarsgård is terrific. He is both terrifying and alluring, the scene in the trailer that recreates the iconic Georgie scene, perfectly showcases the different sides to Skarsgard’s Pennywise, he is whimsical and sinister at the same time. I think his performance is both physical and subtle in that he has loud chases and quiet chats with all the characters and as soon as he appears you know you’ll get a fright, and an enjoyable one at that.
In the other boys the other stand-out is Finn Wolfhard who plays Richie, the comic relief of the group trying to keep it light even in the most grim moments of the film. Really lifting my spirits after some of the more scary moments. The other three lads have their strengths and weaknesses but the aforementioned actors were more stand-out characters but the ensemble is very strong. It is both reminiscent of The Goonies as its a coming of age adventure but it is also a good old fashioned scary movie.
I love this film and would happily revisit the scares and the laughs again. I also can’t wait for the conclusion in part 2. 9/10.
